I woke up feeling like a million pennies. It was easier to list the things that weren’t sore. Putting my bedroom on the second floor had been an enormous tactical blunder. I took my time making sure everything I needed upstairs was taken care of. Compression sleeves came first. In restocking my harness, my loadout changed based on how yesterday went. I picked up a red quiver. Ray had once called them “extremely lethal.” I didn’t feel any different about them today as I had yesterday and set them back on the rack.

The stairs weren’t as bad as I had anticipated, which put some pep in my limp. I was hungry enough for a solid breakfast. Two days in a row wouldn’t kill me, and my leg needed calories to rebuild anyway.

Sleeping had knocked some theories loose. I was getting ready to act on them when Special Investigator Stern called.

“Good day, Sunshine,” I said.

“Sunshine?” Stern was in the car. The morning rush was making itself heard around her.

“Are you an Elvis or Beatles person?”

“I didn’t call to chat, Allen. Neil Leon is dead.”

“Let me guess: asphyxiated with a broken neck.”

“No. Someone made a pin cushion out of him. His body had yellow and blue darts stuck in it. The combination stopped his heart.”
